THE SHADOW REALM
The Shadow Realm is the darkest region of Sovereign’s Rest, a brutal wasteland of scorched stone, salt, fire, and endless moonlight where the sun never rises. Once a thriving forest, it has been stripped bare and carved into caverns, mining camps, and the massive fortress known as the Abyssal Forge, built directly into the mountainside. Aligned with darkness and ambition, the realm is home to vampires, demons, werewolves, and other shadow-born races pulled from countless worlds through the portal to Sovereign’s Rest. Here, power and status are everything, and the inhabitants constantly compete for the Overlord’s favor. The Abyssal Forge reflects their nature—both cruel and decadent—filled with remnants of the luxury and opulence these dark beings once possessed.
THE BASICS OF THE SHADOW REALM
Food and Necessities
Within the Shadow Realm, provisions are provided by the Overlord. Creatures that require sustenance are provided for, including NPC humans for vampires, succubi, and similar beings.
For those who prefer to hunt, livestock is released into the deadlands and during full moons for shifters. These creatures are marked with enchanted tags that prevent them from leaving the region.
If a race requires something to survive, the Overlord provides it.
Rations are distributed by the Keeper of the Shadows. Favored servants receive first choice and the finest provisions, while the remaining Shadow Dwellers take what is left, sometimes forcing them to seek other means of survival.
These laws are strictly enforced, as losing the Overlord’s favor would mean losing all provisions, leaving the Shadow Realm to fend for itself and risk capture beyond its borders.
Tributes to the Overlord
The Overlord demands a weekly tribute. This tribute comes from the resources within the region.
In the Shadow realm, the main resources come from the mines under the forge, minerals, gems, and metals are mined and brought to the Village and the Overlord as tribute.
There are some plants that only grow in the Shadow realm due to sun never rising over the area and it remains in perpetual darkeness.
LOCATIONS IN THE SHADOW REALM
THE DEADLANDS

When you arrive in the Shadow Realm, you immediately know where you are—the Forge stands at its center, surrounded by the Deadlands. What was once a land of forest and life has long since withered away. Now, only barren dirt, scattered stone, and towering dead trees stretch across the landscape.Among this desolation, small camps and stone-built structures stand scattered, serving as housing for those who dwell within the shadows.
ABYSSAL FORGE

This massive structure is built directly into the mountain, carved from the stone as if it were part of the mountain itself. It serves as the home of the Keeper of the Shadow and houses the rooms of the Favored, while also acting as the central meeting place for those who dwell within the Shadow Realm.
Each day, citizens pass through its shadowed halls, as the Forge also marks the entrance to the mines below. The Shadow Guard stands watch, ensuring no one strays into forbidden areas, and some have even made their homes deep within the caves they are sworn to protect.
THE MINES

As you move through the Forge, you pass the inner rooms and the dungeon before descending into the mines far beneath the keep. The caverns stretch deep into the mountain, lit only by flickering torches. The sounds of hammering and the grind of carts echo endlessly through the halls—the mines are never still. To meet the demands of the Overlord for minerals, stone, and gems, the work never ceases.
Yet there is one place within the mines forbidden to all but the Favored: the Shimmering Deep. This cavern is guarded at all times, and only those granted permission may enter and access its magical waters.
STATUE GARDEN

In front of the Forge lies a garden of stone statues—figures carved in the likeness of the creatures that dwell within the Shadow Realm. Were these statues in honor of those that live in the Realm or are they reminders of those punished for breaking the laws within its borders.
